Crespina is located in the Tyrrhenian part of Tuscany, in a quiet area, spread over a succession of hills, not far from the sea and the tourist towns of Pisa, Lucca, Florence and Siena. An oasis of calm surrounded by the green Tuscan countryside, consisting of woods and the beauty of nature, and dotted with old villas. Crespina is famous for the Monument to the Little Owl (Athene noctua) that is to be found in Borgo, in Piazza della Fiera delle Civette. It is in bronze and is by the sculptor Angelo Biancini. Its inauguration was held on 27 September 1970.
It is also famous for its villas, summer dwellings for the rich landowners from Pisa and Leghorn, who in the course of past centuries had chosen Crespina for its beauty and climate. A place worth visiting is the Centre for Little Owl Breeding devoted to breeding of owls in captivity. This has allowed them to be brought back to compete in Piazza del Monumento, in occasion of the annual Little Owl Fair, on 29 September, for Saint Michael’s Day, thus maintaining a centenary tradition that still attracts enthusiasts and tourists from all over Italy.
